Solubility of water in pyrope-rich garnet at high pressures and temperature

چکیده
[1] The water solubility in pyrope-rich garnet was determined between pressures of 5–9 GPa and temperatures of 1373– 1473 K under silica activity and oxygen fugacity similar to those expected in the Earth’s upper mantle. We found that pyrope-rich garnet has substantial water solubility up to 0.1 wt% under these conditions. In addition, the water content in garnet varied as a function of chemical conditions. In particular, the variation in water fugacity (and Mg#) caused a variation in water partitioning with olivine (DH2O ). The substantial water solubility in pyrope-rich garnet under deep upper mantle conditions might have significant influence on physical and transport properties. Citation: Mookherjee, M., and S. Electrical conductivity of orthopyroxene: Implications for the water content of the asthenosphere
Electrical conductivity of minerals is sensitive to water content and hence can be used to infer the water content in the mantle. However, previous studies to infer the water content in the upper mantle were based on pure olivine model of the upper mantle. Influence of other minerals particularly that of orthopyroxene needs to be included to obtain a better estimate of water content in view of ...

Geochemistry and fluid inclusions studies were carried out on garnet and beryl from Quaternary alluvium deposits of Meluli-Namuhuca area, Mozambique. Garnet occurs as euhedral large crystals and is commonly brownish red, with a moderate brown hue in transmitted light. Apatite and ilmenite are the common inclusions. Geochemically, garnet is characterized by nearly homogenous chemical composition...

In the Asemi-gawa area of intermediate high-pressure and low-temperature Sanbagawa metamorphic belt in central Shikoku, Japan, piemontite-quartz schists are common in which cation exchange between piemontite and garnet has been studied. Piemontite in contact with garnet usually contains two zones in which core is enriched in Mn3+ and surrounded by a rim rich in Fe3+. Garnet is Ca-Fe-bearing spe...
